Period Clothing for the Rider

This is an unmounted, presentation and discussion class; scheduled for one hour. An overview of human riding attire through the SCA period, with suggestions for adapting or disguising modern safety helmets and footwear. Attire for a variety of situations will be covered, including battle, tournament, formal and casual civilian riding. (Handout in PDF format)

Instructor

Alexis Garrigues: I’ve been riding for much of my life, and have been in the SCA for 30 years.  About 14 years ago, I put these two interests together, and have really been enjoying learning about the many ways that horses were involved in medieval life.  As a stage costumer, I’m particularly interested in how horses and riders were dressed for various activities, and what that attire communicates to those who view it.

Maitresse Annisa Gabrieli is a 14th century noblewoman who loves to ride.
